Stewart Candlish's principal research interests are in the history of analytic philosophy and its origins, Russell, Wittgenstein, British Idealism, the philosophy of logic, and the philosophy of mind and action. He has published widely in these and other areas [here is a sample of publications] and given seminars, lectures, and plenary addresses at universities and conferences in Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, New Zealand, Singapore, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the USA. He has held visiting positions at the Rockefeller Study Center in Bellagio, the Australian National University, Clare Hall and Darwin College Cambridge, the University of Durham, the Universitaet des Saarlandes, and the University of Sussex.

After some years as an Associate Editor, he is now the Editor of Australasian Journal of Philosophy. He is an Editorial Board member of Philosophy Compass and of the Palgrave Macmillan book series History of Analytic Philosophy (series editor Michael Beaney). In addition, he assesses submissions for other leading philosophy journals and publishers. He is a designated "international expert" for the evaluation of research in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Recent Events

In 2000, Stewart Candlish was elected a Fellow of The Australian Academy of the Humanities.

In 2003 he was awarded Australia's Centenary Medal: "For Service to Australian Society and the Humanities in Philosophy and Religion".

In 2004 he was elected President of the Australasian Association of Philosophy for 2004-2005.

In 2005 he was elected to the Council of the Australasian Association of Philosophy.

In 2007 he was elected Editor of Australasian Journal of Philosophy.
